History

This stand-out building is located within the bounds of historic "Bloomfield", a 7th generation grazing property that dates back to 1862. It is distinctive for its 2500 hectares of sweeping pastures, rolling hills and trout-rich lakes. From kookaburras laughing at dawn to rosellas flitting through trees, our place is a haven for bird lovers and we have 90 species of birds here including 7 of the 12 endemic birds of Tasmania. Enjoy peaceful mornings and listen to the birdlife whilst having a coffee in hand and then explore our walking trails alive with feathered birdlife. The accommodation itself is nestled within the working farm, and a short drive to three lakes well stocked with Rainbow Trout, Wild Brown Trout and Tiger Trout, perfect for fly fishing. The characteristic 28 gates building has been dedicated to offering premium, spacious accommodation for up to six people. Nothing has been overlooked during a complete refurbishment, transforming it from its former life initially as stables and grain lofts, then later as shearers' quarters. Opened in October 2011, this unique and tranquil accommodation in Tasmania is now yours to discover.

Originally built in 1936 as stables and grain lofts, the distinctive 28 gates building has lived many lives. In 1967 devastating fires swept though the property and destroyed the shearers quarters and buildings and the building was hastily transformed into shearers accommodation. Guests can now read powerful stories about these fires written by Michaels father, Geoff offering rare glimpse into the proeprty’s rich and resilient past.

Today, owners Susie and Michael Parsons have lovingly reimagined the building once again. Following a complete refurbishment, 28 gates now offers a luxury farmstay experience , blending heritage charm with modern comfort.

Susie and Michael reside in the historic Bloomfield homestead, built in 1910 at the heart of their 2500 hectare , seventh generation farming property. Bloomfield runs around 10 000 Merino and White Sufffolk sheep, producing fine Tasmanian wool and premium free range grass fed lamb. The property is also complemented by 600 acres of irrigation for fodder crops and now leases land for pine plantations supporting carbon farming initiatives.

Nature & wildlife on your doorstep

Whilst we offer a number of activities here at 28 gates, we are very well known for a strong Fly Fishing culture with three lakes where you can find Wild Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Tiger Trout. To date, the largest fish caught weighed a delightful 10 pounds, with the average weight being around 4 pounds. We have found that a woolly worm fly is a winner with these fish and the bonus of fishing at 28 gates is that you do not need a license. Another benefit of indulging in farm stay luxury is you can fish all year round in complete privacy!

Staying on a working farm means a variety of unique experiences are right on your doorstep. Depending on what’s happening on the property, you maybe able to watch on. Explore the walking tracks, feed the farm animals, go on a property tour, enjoy sunset drinks and canapés by a fire or head out on a guided ‘night tour' on dusk to see the native Tasmanian wildlife...a must experience for all ages.

We are also fast becoming a targeted destination for bird watchers. We are known to have at least 7 of the 12 endemic birds which are only found in Tasmania: Yellow-throated Honeyeater, Yellow Wattlebird, Tasmanian Native Hen, Black Currawong, Green Rosella, Tasmanian Scrub wren, and the Tasmanian Thornbill.
